Terms of Use

Overview

Welcome to Pet Lore. By using this website, submitting materials, joining a waiting list, subscribing for updates, or participating in Pet Lore-related projects, you agree to use this site respectfully and in accordance with these terms.

These terms apply to the Pet Lore website, The Good Companion journal, submission forms, waiting lists, community interest forms, and related Pet Lore projects.

Website Content

The content on this website is provided for general informational, creative, editorial, and community purposes. Pet Lore may update, revise, remove, or reorganize website content at any time.

The Good Companion Journal

The Good Companion is Pet Lore’s journal for essays, art, research, field notes, and guided storytelling about the lives we share with animals. Submitting work does not guarantee acceptance or publication. Selected work may go through editorial review, revision, formatting, and contributor communication before publication. Pet Lore and The Good Companion reserve the right to decline submissions that do not fit the journal’s theme, standards, policies, or editorial direction.

Contributor Submissions

By submitting work, you confirm that:

  • The work is yours to submit, or you have permission to submit it

  • You have permission to share any images, stories, people, organizations, private spaces, or materials included

  • You have disclosed whether the work has been previously published or is under consideration elsewhere

  • Your submission does not knowingly violate another person’s copyright, privacy, or rights

Contributors retain copyright to their work unless otherwise agreed in writing. By accepting publication, contributors grant The Good Companion permission to publish accepted work online as part of the journal and related issue materials. Published work may also be promoted through Pet Lore’s website, social media, newsletters, Substack, digital issue platforms, and related promotional materials.

Editorial Review and Edits

The Good Companion may make minor edits for grammar, spelling, punctuation, formatting, clarity, style, headlines, captions, and consistency.

Major edits affecting meaning, structure, tone, sensitive details, or factual framing will be discussed with the contributor before publication.

Contributor Payment

At this launch stage, accepted work is unpaid, and there are no submission fees.

Pet Lore’s goal is to introduce contributor honoraria as the journal grows through readership, partnerships, sponsorships, grants, and aligned support.

AI Use

Pet Lore allows limited, thoughtful AI assistance for writing support, outlining, brainstorming, proofreading, and editing. However, submitted work should remain grounded in the contributor’s own voice, experience, research, judgment, and creative direction.

AI-generated images are not accepted for cover art. AI-assisted diagrams or helper visuals may be considered when clearly disclosed and when they do not misrepresent real people, animals, events, research, or lived experiences.

Pet Lore App

The Pet Lore app is currently in development. Any descriptions of planned app features, beta opportunities, launch timing, or future services are informational and may change as development continues. Joining the app waiting list does not guarantee beta access, launch access, or availability by a specific date. A fuller app-specific terms and privacy policy may be provided before public launch.

Community Participation

Pet Lore may invite users, contributors, readers, or supporters to participate in future community spaces, events, prompts, groups, or discussions. Participants are expected to engage respectfully. Pet Lore may remove or restrict participation from anyone who behaves abusively, harasses others, misuses community spaces, violates policies, or acts in a way that undermines the safety or purpose of the project.

Intellectual Property

Unless otherwise stated, Pet Lore’s website content, branding, design, written materials, graphics, journal structure, prompts, issue materials, and original Pet Lore-created content belong to Pet Lore. You may not copy, reproduce, modify, sell, or republish Pet Lore materials without permission, except for normal sharing of public links or approved contributor promotional materials.

Third-Party Tools and Links

Pet Lore may use third-party platforms for forms, email lists, file storage, analytics, digital publishing, community management, and related services. This website may also link to external websites, resources, social platforms, or contributor pages. Pet Lore is not responsible for the content, policies, security, or practices of third-party websites or platforms.

No Professional Advice

Content on Pet Lore and The Good Companion may discuss animals, grief, disability, care, service animals, psychology, training, health, or related topics. This content is not a substitute for professional legal, medical, psychological, veterinary, training, accessibility, or safety advice. Readers should consult qualified professionals when needed.

Corrections and Updates

Pet Lore may correct errors, update published information, revise pages, or add clarifications when appropriate. Contributors may contact Pet Lore if they identify an error, need to clarify a detail, or have concerns about published contributor materials.

Changes to These Terms

Pet Lore may update these terms as the website, journal, app, community, and related projects grow. Continued use of the website after changes are posted means you accept the updated terms.
